A New Type of Leg Sling to Keep Your Foot Up
05/09/03
SEATTLE - If you've ever used crutches with an injured foot or leg, you
know it can be tough lifting that limb as you maneuver around. Now, an
Ohio man and his family have invented a sling that can help give other
people a leg up when they can't put their foot down.
Robert Webb's job of fixing gutters often took him to new heights, but
a ladder fall six years ago broke his foot and he couldn't afford not
to work So he invented a leg sling to keep his foot up. There was a dog
harness and an old bungee cord, which kept his foot up for five weeks.
He eventually showed it to his doctor.
He wasn't allowed to put his foot down but his doctor didn't say he couldn't
work, so he showed him the leg sling, and he said it was a great idea.
The original sling morphed into a slick design that Annie Milosovic demonstrated
to her fellow physical therapists at Southpointe hospital in Ohio.
"I think it's great we've used it here at the hospital and I can
see us using it again for the right person somebody who needs to hold
their leg up," said Milosovic. It took six years to get from a dog
harness, bungee cord and tool belt to the current design. They've already
shown it to 400 Cleveland doctors, sent it to four different states and
they already have a leg up on the competition, because there isn't any.
"If it helped me walk quicker and keep about my ordinary life, it
can help anybody," Webb said.
The bungee cord allows the foot to drop for balance and the straps are
padded for comfort.
Webb and his stepfather have just started marketing the leg sling.
